Re: [APML] Another image processing challenge for snowy nights-M45

Wow, what a difference from my shot!  In the last few days I have learned more about image processing with photoshop than I learned in the last several months trying to do this on my own.  This has been a fantastic learning experience.
The m45 photo was my third night at astrophotography.  I switched to the Fuji 800 my second time, and I thought it was much better than the PJ400 shots I took.  I guess I will have to rethink this.  It would seem that the faster film records the sky fog more, resulting in the grain becoming more more pronounced.  Is this an acurate observation?

All of my shots on the web were done using levels, gaussian blur, unsharp masking, color balance and contrast/brightness.  Up until now, that was all that I used.  I now have a lot of new techniques that will also take a long time to master I am sure!
Thanks again.

I must be a masochist because here's my attempt at enhancing Tom's shot:

My gut feeling is that the 800 speed film is too grainy and that sky fog was too pronounced to make an effective final shot.  I wonder what the results would have been like with two, 30-minute exposures using 400 speed film instead.  Hmmm...

Hi All!

If any of you would like to try another raw image, I have a 2 shot composite of M45 at 2048x1371 pixels.  The image size is 8Mb and you can download it at

http://astrophotonut.tripod.com/m45small.tif

Be sure to right click the above hyperlink and select Save Target As

This one is 2 30 minute exposures on Fuji Superia 800 Extra.  There is no processing done at all.  No levels, nothing.  I'd love to see what the pros can do to my image!

My result is at http://astrophotonut.tripod.com/m45.htm

Thanks!
