I've fooled around with masks for several hours and still haven't found a 
pleasing compromise.  In the end, I just did a little non-linear processing 
on the blue channel to reduce the visual effect of the halos and called it a 
day.  In doing so I ended up making a somewhat less pleasing overall image of 
the nebula regions, but that's life.

Anyway, for those who want to see what the image looks like, here's my humble 
attempt.  I don't expect it to be even close to the best, but what the heck.

Even with my fumbling, it's still a very nice image of a faint object, and it 
IS fun to play with other people's hard work. :-)
