By your answer I can only guess that you fail to understand Jerry's
post. Perhaps you have never attended a gathering of old cars buffs?

When I'm not working or star gazing I like to tear up the pavement on my
R1. Do you think I hang out with or discuss motorcycles with a group
of Harley riders?? Ahh, no.

Let me give you another analogy:

There are some artists who still create portraits with that ancient
medium of brush, oil and canvas. This is an aesthetic and personal
choice. Yet today nearly all portraits are done with cameras (film or
digital). When these artists get together they discuss the brushes,
paints or canvas materials used. The art of blending various textures.
The type of oils used. Certainly these people know there are other
mediums but choose to use paint and want to talk about paint.

This is a mailing list primarily made up of artists / photographers that
use film as their medium of capturing information. That is the purpose
of the list.

For those that want to delve into the technical aspects of CCD I suggest
the CCD mailing list. This is accessed by sending a message to:

to: <majordomo@listserv.wwa.com>
in the message body: subscribe ccd

You even have the same moderator over there (Gene!). There are plenty of
excellent, long time CCD folks on that list who are very knowledgeable.
You will find Robert Gendler posts everything on that list that he does
here. And it is a more appropriate place to discuss the subject. Plenty
of folks will argue / discuss the merits of flat fielding, darks, etc.

As mentioned several times the Canon camera's are discussed at length on
the Digital_Astro group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/digital_astro/

This is a pretty active group. As Jerry mentioned there are plenty of
places just for CCD. I think we all know about the Yahoo SBIG group.
There is even the Yahoo ST-237 group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ST-237/

I frequent all these groups and more. HOWEVER, this is the only mailing
list for film that I know of.

As people move into other methods of acquiring images they should move
onto other social groups dedicated to those methods. What is so hard to
understand about this? I am not on this mailing list to hear your
evolution into CCD. Do you understand that?

The community that each mailing list has is built around the subject
matter. Not the people that frequent the list. This seems to be a
problem with some folks here. They want the same group of people to talk
with. This appears to be the reason this subject comes up and will not
go away.

I don't want the APML to be a CCD list. When I move to another
technology and technique for imaging, discarding film (or it is gone), I
will move off the APML. After all, this is where people get together and
discuss film.

I've been on this list for four years and I'm tired of the constant
attempt to refocus it. I will not let this matter rest. I do not want
people trying to shove the new square block into a round hole. There are
many others that feel this way but rarely if ever speak up. Time and
time again Gene has indicated the majority opinion is to stay focused on
film.

If the mailing list's charter is to be changed then I suggest that be
done, the group renamed and the APML be put to rest. Then, as in a
museum, you can walk by and look at the APML as a place in time.

Respectfully,

Howard Edin
