Actually, I've had very good luck with APC systems, both on my network
at home and at several commercial networks for which I've been
responsible.  If it was the UPS, I suspect you got a defective
one...certainly not to be expected from APC.

One possibility might be that if you were running the software that
shuts down your system before the battery runs down that there could
have been an issue there.  I have seen some issues with pre-Windows 2000
systems.  The other thing that comes to mind is that you may have a
power supply that is very sensitive to the wave shape of the incoming
power.  I have seen power supplies that would not tolerate the near
square-wave output of some cheap UPS units, but again, this has never
been an issue for me with APC units.

I'd probably give another one a try.
