Steve, I think both theories may be contributing to those choppy star trails
but I think camera shake might be the worst offender. Jerry L's advice is to
always resize in integer steps as was already recommended. Still, looks to
me like the camera was moving slightly over the evening.
My star trails are taken usually at f/8 on 400 film and I'll go for about 3
hours. I use 16mm, 24mm, 28mm and 50mm lenses for this.
