Yes, this will work. To make it more effective, you can also rotate the entire image until the elongation lines up left to right or up-down. What really works well is to take a series of images, de-ovalize them, then average them together. You will be amazed at the results. One of the reason that CCD images tend to have higher resolution is that the imagers are used to taking lots and lots of images and stacking them. This is something that the film guys need to do. Don't be afraid of layers in Photoshop. It's easy to do.
