The nebulosity in your image is real. I just checked two deep shots from
my friend Josef Mueller he took with his 10" Schmidt on TP. The 6cm
negatives cover a much larger area of the sky and requested region is
almost at the middle of the negative. So there is no doubt. The whole
area between the zeta Orionis region and M42 ist full with faint
nebulosity.

Actually, the images I get on Tech Pan with my Schmidt show a large
oval-shaped faint nebulocity with a bar through it overlaying the Horsehead
regeon.  It kind of looks like the Greek letter "theta".
