Re: [APML] AV layers, was:M81 and IC405
Steve,

There is no absolute _best_ way to do this. It's kind of like asking, "what
is the best way to paint a portrait of a bowl of fruit." Different artists
are going to use different techniques. The same is true of much of
the digital processing we do with astrophoto's. The technique that
works for you and gives you the results you desire is the best one for you.
Let me point you to a few articles that I am aware of:
1) http://www.astropix.com/HTML/J_DIGIT/VIGNET.HTM is an article on
Jerry's site. His technique uses a Hard Light layer to balance the
brightness
and a Soft Light layer to bring the color into balance. It's very well
documented.
2) http://www.starmatt.com/articles/av.html is an article on Matt's site.
Matt's
technique uses a Screen layer in conjunction with a curves layer to pull out
the
vignetting and balance the colors. Matt even has some files you can
download
and see how the technique works.
3) http://bellsouthpwp.net/f/r/frankb02/AntiVignette.html is a brief article
I
recently put together documenting my experiments with AV. My technique
uses multiple Soft Light layers which each take a small part of the
vignetting/gradient away.
So there's no one correct way. One caveat though, I'm kind of new to all
this
digital processing stuff and I haven't applied my technique to color yet.
Matt and Jerry have been at this a lot longer than I have. So you might
want to experiment with their techniques first.
