Those files, and opening and closing them, are about
as scary as anything else, but I'm getting used to it.

I have not seen the filters section active at all.
I'll continue to check.

Oh yeah, I have the same problem. I'm trying to
remember to make a copy before I start doing weird
stuff. 'Copy' under Edit (I think) is also never
active, so I've been using 'duplicate'. I hope these
are the same thing.

Also, I want this understood by all. I am trying hard
to earn the distinction of "most inept at image
processing". So, if any of you are thinking about
giving me a run for the title... back off. :-)
