LZW is a lossless form of compression - that is you can use it without any
degradation to the image. It is same family of compression as PKZIP. On a
typical astro image, it will save 5% - 20%. In this day of 120 Gig
harddrives, I only save tiffs uncompressed, mainly because they load faster.
Also some imaging software will not read tiffs stored with compression... A
few years ago I put together a page showing the differences between lossless
and lossey file formats for webpages. Its not aimed at astrophotos but the
ideas still apply...
