Don't use any form of compression until/unless you need to save for web
display, e-mail, etc, ie, make the file much smaller. *Always* save in a
non-lossy (ie, uncompressed) form. That means tiff or (for photoshop) psd
format.
When you ask "is there a good way to sharpen" do you mean something better
than what is described in the on-line tutorials/help files that come with
the programs? And for any Photoshop astro processing question, going direct
to Jerry Lodriguss' site will get you the most expert answer available for
astro work. I assume you've read up on what's already there in the Photoshop
help files (you do use the help files, right?<G>) and Jerry's site, so all I
can add is that for my astro processing, unsharp masking is the only
technique I've used on color film or RGB-combined ccd images. If you're
ready for more involved stuff --- to be applied to luminance images--- then
deconvolution is an important option.
