If you want to use auto curves as a starting point, that's fine. After that, if you check the histogram, you will almost certainly see that it is clipped. Re-open that curves layers and adjust it by hand. You usually can do much better than the linear curves that auto generates. The curve 3b in my article (http://starmatt.com/articles/curves.html) was generated by auto curves.
Pretty much the same can be said for auto levels. If you are like me, once you learn curves and levels, it is straightforward to adjust without the auto stuff.
I use the minimum filter sometimes to reduce star size. If I recall, it was Mike Cook who relayed that info to the APML from the AIP4WIN group. I didn't use it on Central Auriga (http://starmatt.com/gallery/astro/central_auriga.html), but I think it is reasonable to do so. I did use minimum filter on the Veil (http://starmatt.com/gallery/astro/veil.html), and that image was subsequently published in S&T and in the RASC Calendar.
