Dean,
There are two common ways of combining TP and color film images;
1) using the TP as a luminance layer usually at 50%, although the TP layer
at 40% or other variations will often give better color results.
2) Converting to LAB mode and cutting out the luminance layer of the color
film and replacing it with the TP image. This will often give gross color
shifts but it keeps all the resolution of the TP image. Sometimes this
method can be used but often the color is too poor to be acceptable.
These are the two most common methods I know of but there are probably many
other ways. In my image I did preliminary images of both; then combined an
80%-20% mix of a luminance layerimage-LAB method image which gave the best
color and resolution mix. But as Chuck Vaughn will tell you, this is
ultimately a compromise. Tri-color TP will give the most bang for the buck
with TP.
