I believe Nikon decided this is not a problem, but they recommend that if you do
encounter banding switch to "fine" mode scan to get rid of it, at the expense of
tripling your scanning time. The banding is due to how Nikon calibrates the CCD
array.

The other complaint with the Nikon is the very shallow depth-of-focus, again
would be a big problem with bowed medium format negatives.. could be solved by a
glass carrier.
