You could also try and find a used Canon EOS 630 or EOS-1.  The former
is much cheaper but you'll have to splice in your own shutter release.
The latter is _very_ expensive but also more widely available.

The opening is noticeably larger than Nikon's.  Cell drain is not a
factor with these two models.  The cell is not used to hold the shutter
open (although there is a very miniscule draw from the electronics being
active.
