A while back I thought about trying a Mamiya 645 for just this reason.  You
can get a 35mm film back for these that takes standard film cassettes.  I
figured that the lens opening must be larger to cover 6x4.5 format, so that
on 35mm film it would be totally unvignetted.  It also seems like you should
be able to focus using a loupe directly on the screen.

I never got around to trying this out, however, so I can't say for sure it
would work.  It would sure be easier to do, I'll bet.
