RE: [APML] OT Medium Format Film Scanners

Hi Jay,

I use the SS120 and am very happy with it. As Scott mentioned, film
flatness issues, if present, can be corrected by ordering a $35 piece of
anti-Newton glass. I did this and haven't looked back since. I don't have
any experience with the other scanners you mention, but like the SS120
enough to have sold my SS4000.

Now I need to find that prescan "raw" setting Tony mentioned. I've been
doing final scans as "raw" for some time, which also lets you do everything
you want later, but I guess PS is limited in handling 16-bit images (I use
PW, which lets you do everything in 16-bit mode if you want).

If you get one of these, be aware that you will definitely want to upgrade
your RAM. 512Mb was minimally workable with 16-bit 6x7 images scanned at
2750 DPI, but performance is glacial if you go all the way to 4000 DPI. I
upgraded to 1Gb RAM, and may get another 512Mb stick soon, since my
motherboard will handle it. At 2750 DPI, a 6x7 16-bit scan is about 255Mb,
so you need lots of RAM to keep more than one or two open at a time.
Increasing the virtual memory of your machine helps, too.

Sincerely,
Jon Kolb
