Re: [APML] Crimped Negatives

Thank you Leakos, Matt & Robert.

The slides were very dark astrophotos.  I tried to take a bright indoor photo for the first one, but I messed up somehow & it came out black. Yes, I am grateful they did not try to cut them. I had a hard time myself seeing where to cut. They are now cut in strips & being pressed in a book with weight on it. Would it ruin the emulsion side to gently try to reverse bend them? Where would I buy glass mounts & negative wrappers?

I was planning to scan them. I have a 6 frame film holder for my scanner which will flatten them somewhat, but not the bad crimps. The glass mounts seem like the best solution. My scanner will also accept slides in mounts.

Are there any good Photo Labs by mail? I live in Southern New England. I sent a roll to Fuji in Arizona 2 months ago & it took 3 weeks to get back. The Lab I used this time has a 3 day turn around time by mail, but they certainly don't have the right packaging to ship an uncut roll of developed film.

I just got back a roll of slide film which the Photo Lab could not cut & put in mounts. (My fault) They loosely rolled it up & put it in a rectangular cardboard box. In the mail the box got flattened. Is there any way to remove the crimps? There are 13 crimps all together & a few are quite sharply crimped.

What is the ultimate use for these dammaged slides?  Do you intend to scan them or project them?  Both previous replies will do you some good and if they are destined for projection, I suggest both!  Flatten them with books, then use glass slide mounts to keep them flat.  I don't know how critical the focus is on a scanner.  A sharp ridge on the slide may not remain in focus.

If they are astrophotos with a dark sky background, you didn't want them to cut and mount them anyway.  Thats a good way to get each picture cut in half as they can't see the border between shots.  Always cut and mount your own dark sky slides.
