[APML] OT:Help needed Optimizing Computer for PS(long)
I am changing around my computer...I am trying to optimize for PS. I
hope someone can give me some suggestions...I am adding a 40Gig HD on
the second physical HD and going with Dual Boot and win2K, so that I
still have Win98 to run those glitchy programs...here is a post I made
to a storage group, but no help there, I hope those here can give me
some insight so I can get this right....Astro processing is killiing my
machine and PS is all gummed up under win98, some advice on how to set
up the win memory manager and the PS scratch disk would be appreciated.
Partitioning guidance would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice!
Below is my posting.....
Right now I am running Win98SE2 on my primary physical HD 13.6g),
single partition. I just use a second HD (also 13.6) for backup and
data storage, also no partitioning. I also use CD-RW for critical
backup files. I am acquiring a copy of Win2Kpro and another (40G) HD
and want to load the Win2K with Dual boot and was hoping for some help
to a few basic questions that archetecture setup and the Dual Boot
setup recipe...
I have:
-550mhzP3 processor w/768meg RAM
-13.6g IDE HD(primary master)
-13.6g IDE HD (primary slave)
-DVD/CD ROM (Secondary master)
-CD R/RW (secondary slave)
Coming is the 40Gig IBM IDE HD. I will stay in FAT32, I use Photoshop
a lot.
Here is my idea of the new archetecture (trying to prevent
reinstalling Win98 and all it's related programs):
-13.6g IDE HD (keep existing primary master with Win 98 and related
programs
installed)
-CD-ROM (move to primary slave) most writing to this will occur out of
second
HD.
-40g IDE HD (make secondary master with Win2K, also main Data
Directories)
-DVD CD-ROM (make scondary slave) most DVD operation will be out of
Win98.
1. Can Dual boot be out of different physical drives?
2. Should I set up a Win sctach disk partiiton (2gig?) when I format
the 40g drive? Should I set up a (2gig) Photoshop scratch disk
partition? If so to both of these, where should on the drive these
partitions be?
3. Do I need to use FDisk or something else (I have Norton) to format
the 40G drive to get around the 32.5 gig problem?
4. When formatting the 40Gig drive, do I tell it that it will be a
bootable drive or will the Win2K install do that?
5. Do I need to reinstall under Win2K any programs I want to run when
booted to Win2K?
thanks for any help!
Have a Nice Day!
