I think the key words here is that he was approximating a visual image.
As we all (may) know, the response of the dark-adapted eye shifts towards
the blue, and in fact, from my spectroscopic imaging of planetaries with
strong H-alpha, the eye is dead sensitivity-wise at 650nm. It makes sense
then that any approximation to a visual image would be rather blue.
I neglected to mention that there were several M8 images in their gallery
as someone pointed out. It is access thru the gallery link at their main
site of www.noao.edu.
