RE: [APML]: Vermin at the observing site?
"Bumps in the night" at remote observing sites are very unnerving
if your alone and/or in the middle of critical activitives at wee hours.
I recently had to pack up and quickly leave a site due to some unknown
but rather sizeble creature in the bushes that just wouldn't leave.
Next time out I plan to bring a bucket of rocks or something to
throw into the brush to help scare away small animals & dear.
Playing some low level music seems to help, I think most animals
steer clear of noise. I keep my truck nearby & readily accessable
for quick shelter. It is also wise, I'm told, to avoid any aromatic foods.
Some day when I own my own observing site I plan
to have a short hurricane fence enclosure around a concret pad
to keep out unwanted visitors & instill a sense of security (short of an
observtory).
As for mosquitos I think Deep Woods Off works very well.
The worst part is just plain overcoming the fear of the Boogie Man.
