If you compare the density range of a slide and a negative of the 
same image. . .the slide exhibits a greater density range.  Compared 
to prints, slides (or just about any good transmissive media) have a 
larger dynamic range than reflective media (color print paper).

That does make it tough to make prints or screen displays look like 
slides.
