Chuck Vaughn sent me a photo of his worm gear assemble. I don't know
what you're starting with for a worm block, but I think it would take
some machining to get a good, solid spring loaded worm movement. The
whole bloch that the worm and motor are mounted on are hinged with a
ground socket head screw so that there's no play, but it doesn't bind.
At the other end of the block, mounted below it on the plate is a small
block with a small spring that pushes the worm against the RA gear. It's
mostly to take up any lack of concentricity between the shaft hole and
the gear circle. It will keep the worm from binding against the RA gear
or running too far away from it and allowing slop. It's simple, but I
don't know how hard it would be to accomplish on an existing drive.
Don't have a Bridgeport in the basement, do you? ;-)
