Actually, it is still doen that way in some places. I was talking to David
Levy a few months ago, he, Carolyn and the late Gene hypered tech pan by placing it in
an oven and running forming gas over it during the hypering process. They only did
this for about 6-8 hours. I do not know how good it works, but obviously good enough
to discover comet Shoemaker-Levy, so they gotta be doing somethng right. :)
It does make me wonder if the constant flow of gas over the film carries away
moisture and oxygen forced out of the film, and this in turn lessens the hypering
times.
