I heard it described by Larry Alvarez, an amazing solar photographer, as being reminiscent of gasoline on water. That is nearly a perfect description in my estimation.

I took my flats this evening and completely reprocessed the CED214 etc image. I ended up tossing a few frames that had some minor guiding problems so the image now consists of 11.5 hours exposure instead of 13.5 hours.
 
the colors came out with better saturation.
 
here's the final result
