Thanks for your insights, and Mike, thanks for the link. I had not seen
it. 

An update: When the sky started getting bright because of the moon. I
ended the exposure and re-set the ST-4 with the larger (40) calibration
parameters, ran a calibration and commenced guiding. I saw the exact
same corrections I had been seeing; 0's, 1's, and an occaisonal 2 or 3.
BTW, the star easily stayed on the chip by using the numbers I
mentioned earlier. 

My conclusion is that for the focal length I'm using, the '20' I had
been using as the calibration input is more than sufficient and is
optimized for my setup.

However, I'd hazard a guess that for those shooting at longer focal
lengths, a bigger calibration movement will be a good thing. As long as
the star stays on the chip. 8-)
