Is it new to you, or has it been performing well for awhile and just
now started acting funny? If stars are badly out of focus you may not
get a brightness reading. However if you've been using the ST-4 for
awhile then this most likely is not the problem. 

Also, don't forget to make sure you are taking exposures of long enough
length to show somethinbg on the brightness readout.

I sent mine in last year and SBIG did not even charge me for looking at
it.
