Re: [APML] Older vs. newer lens advice? Favorite lenses?
Mike,
If you're planning on eventually using the lenses for widefield CCD
work, and you likely will end up with a SBIG camera, the standard right now
seems to be the Mandel Wide field adapter (better than what SBIG sells as
an accessory), which is for Nikon lenses, but there seems to be some unit
for other brands on his site as well; I would contact him and perhaps he
can add some info to help with your decision:

I'm not affiliated with him, nor do I have any experience with one, just
info I've picked up here and there from others.

Please respond to
Discussion of Film
Astrophotography
List,
I have finally decided to build a 'real' 35mm astrophoto system,
rather than extend my current mongrel lash-up.
No intent here to start a Nikon/Canon war but...
I will be choosing between one of these two photo gear lines,
and can't justify affording both. Whether one is 'better' than
the other has been extensively discussed on this list and elsewhere.
My question is: for on-camera film astrophotography and
eventually for attaching to an astro-specific CCD, are the new
lenses of the above-mentioned brands "preferred" or "better"
optically and/or mechanically than the older, manual focus models
of the same brand?
Any suggestions on outstanding astrophoto lenses, any brand,
new or old, any focal length? How about lenses to avoid?
Please feel free to contact me off-list.
Thanks very much,
Mike Connors
