You're right, ST-4's and Meade's Pictor cameras are no longer made. I
use one of each: ST-4 and Meade 201XT. ST-4 on the G-11/Gemini and the
201XT on the LX200. These are still available on the used market for
about $550 and $200 respectively, sometimes less. It was mentioned that
ST could be found for $250. If you see one that cheap, get a couple. If
in working order, they will easily fetch $500 on Astromart.
I think also that one of the other SBIG cameras (ST-5, or ST-6, maybe
both?) can be used as autoguiders but may require a laptop. Also the
Meade 208XT can be used as a standalone guider and has a cooled chip,
the 201 does not. Most of the time though that has not caused a problem
for me. Being in Texas, the situation may be different for you.
The STV is the other option in standalone guiders.
