Re: [APML] aurora shots (OT)

Stuart and Ray,

Thanks for your advice. I'll have to keep researching it to narrow it
down to a few specific areas. I've been to Alaska as far as Fairbanks,
but unfortunately it was during the summer. Iceland was fantastic for
scenery as well as the aurora. It's true that the weather is pretty bad
in general, but the northern part of the island has better conditions. As
far as I know, during the week or so that I was there, the southern half
of the island (including Reykjavik) was wet and cloudy. While clouds blew
through often in the north too, it was clear for at least half the night
each night, and temperatures were mild (around 0 C).

While I was in Iceland, one person told me that he had lived in Greenland
a few year prior and he said the auroral displays were better there with
more varied colors and greater intensity. So Greenland is on my list too,
but I'm wondering if it just happened that he was there when solar
activity was higher.

One factor I want to take into account for a future trip is that I would
prefer to go in the late fall or early spring, and so accessibility and
relative mildness of the winter is important.

Dave
