RE: [APML] aurora shots (OT)

there is an "optimal" place with regards to weather.

Dave,

Not that this narrows it down much (!), but I'm pretty sure that the best
place weatherwise is somehere in North America (Canada, Alaska, even northern
US) because of the offet of the magnetic pole from the spin pole. This places
the band of highest auroral visibility at a much lower latitude in North
America than in Europe or Russia. I live at 53.5N in Ireland and hardly ever
see an aurora. A Canadian at 48N would see many times more. At lower-mid
latitudes and away from moist (read cloudy) maritime air, weather is generally
clearer than at higher-mid latitudes.

You were lucky in Iceland, which is far enough north and west of Europe to lie
within the auroral band, but is not noted for clear skies or agreeable
climate. Spectacular place otherwise, according to my Greek friend Symeon who
just spent two weeks there.
