Re: [APML] OT: Iris Nebula
Stuart,
I don't know why this object isn't shot more often as it does respond
well to film. It is one of the brightest reflection nebula in the northern
sky, embedded in dark nebulosity with a curious open cluster. I just happen
to have a film image from a while ago, and it doesn't stand up too badly
against Rob's wonderful image. (using a 17 cent single-use detector)
http://members.shaw.ca/jmirtle/n7023.htm I believe that Tony Hallas has a
rather nice film image, taken with a C14 if memory serves correctly.
What I find interesting about this nebula is the open cluster CR427
right beside the center of the nebula. It appears to float in front of the
darkest part of the dark nebula. To me it almost looks like the dark part is
a hole in the nebula, and the "cluster" is a star field behind the dark
nebula.
Very nice image Rob, that central star must have bloomed like crazy.
Interesting that you refer to this as "wide field"..... :-)

Rob - a remarkable picture of an unusual object. How did you choose it
as a target?
