Alan, I'm no expert on firewalls, but one major thing that ZoneAlarm does is monitor programs on your computer that attempt to access the Internet. At first when you install the program (as you've no doubt found out by now), a ZoneAlarm window will pop up every time some program on your computer tries to access the Internet. You have to explicitly give ZoneAlarm permission for that program. If you check the "Repeat each time" box, then ZoneAlarm won't bug you about that program again. Eventually, after you have manually authorized all the programs on your PC that need to access the Internet, it will stop bugging you.

I gather this feature is to prevent some unauthorized program on your PC from accessing the Internet without your knowledge. No doubt ZoneAlarm also blocks the Internet from accessing your computer inappropriately, but I have no idea how that works.
