Re: [APML] CANON LENSES FOR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY

I have used the Tamron f/2.8 macro lens for astrophotography and it is very good.  I was primarily a user of Canon products for general photography and liked them very much.  However, for astrophotography I think in general they are inferior to Nikon especially regarding chromatic aberration.  I used the Canon 300 mm "L" lens and was quite disappointed.  Perhaps, this was only one of their "duds" and their other lenses might be better.

Subject: [APML] CANON LENSES FOR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY

I have a Canon EOS 10D that accepts Canon's EF lenses. I presently own a 24mm to 85mm f/3.5 zoom which is handy but does not deliver tight star images free of colour error/other distortions unless stopped down to f/5.6 (!!!!!). I recently purchased a Canon 200 USM fixed focal length telephoto which is very sharp, especially when stopped down to f/4. It provides a great field of view for properly framing many nebulae.

It seems that all manufacturers have 'duds' in their product lineup, and excellent lenses too. I have consulted some sites (www.photodo.com etc...) but
I need to hear from anyone has tried the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro for astrophotography, or the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro.

Also..

Which wide angle lenses deliver sharp stars free of signifcant field curvature, distortion, colour error and the like.

Any duds to avoid?

Finally..

Any other lenses you could recommend for nature/astrophotography?

Thanks!
