Chris, Jerry, and other:  A similar issue is "when" to
set the color space during the processing of an image.
 For instance, if you have your monitor properly set
up with Adobe Gamma and then process an image, without
first assigning a color space, can you then assign a
color space as a last step, depending upon your needs
(sRGB for the web, or Adobe RGB for printing)?

It would seem that this is a reasonable strategy,
since the color space (as I understand it) is a way
for the computer to "talk" to various outputs like
printers or the web, translating color information so
that what appears red on your monitor also appears the
same shade of red on your print, for instance.  So
I've typically assigned it as one of the last steps in
image processing, but I would welcome comments as to
whether this is correct.
