You will indeed need a serial to parallel converter. The B&W quick-cam
uses up the parallel port, on the plus side it is much more sensitive
than the colour ones that are floating around.
Another site to have a look at is the original cookbook camera, I don't
have the url handy but a quick web search should turn it up.
The serial converter chip is getting harder to come by, it is considered
an antique these days.
Consider using wirewrap if you decide to make you own board, much
quicker and in many ways easier than soldering.
I am about to start using mine but is will be a modified manual guider,
instead of squinting in the eyepiece I'll watch the laptop screen and
keep the star boxed. That way I can sit comfortably in a lawn chair and
not have to worry about bumping the scope.
