[APML] Another slide/negative scanner query

Hi all,

I'm considering the purchase of a slide/negative
scanner and I thought I'd ask all of you for some
advice first.

>From what I have gathered from prior posts, it sounds
like I might be wasting my time with anything less
than 4800 dpi. Is this true? If so, can a (good)
scanner capable of 4800 be had for $1K or less?

The scanner will, of course, be used for
astrophotography, but I try to get out and do some
nature photography from time to time also. I happened
to notice in photo submission guidelines for many
magazines that take shots from freelancers that when
they say they accept photos in digital format, they
almost always ask for 300 dpi. I did the math for a
300 dpi 8x10, and (correct me if I'm wrong, any pros
out there) I think they basically want a 35mm or
larger slide scanned at 4800 dpi, which, when blown up
to a decent size, results in the magic 300.

Not that I'm anywhere close to a career in freelance
photography, but it would just be nice to have a good
enough scanner not to "leave anything on the table" if
I get lucky and take a good shot once in a while.

Thanks,

EZB
