RE: [APML] CCD on APML (was: NGC 7331)
As someone very new to all of this I'd like to make a few comments.
After moving from a very light polluted Maryland to New Mexico about 2
years ago, I've recently started getting into astrophotography.
Actually I started about 3 nanoseconds after Kodak killed the GOOD Supra
400 ;-( I did manage to stock up on some of the old stuff.
I would say that the single biggest thing that I get out of this list,
is the detailed discussion of processing the images after the exposure.
And I would hate to see some of the processing tips passed on by the CCD
guys lost forever.
I'm sure that I will always be shooting film. There's no way I'll ever
afford a decent CCD with a 35mm size/format. So for widefield stuff,
film is it and for me, always will be.
But I also understand that there are things that film won't do well. I
had a friend in MD who spent 2 years shooting planets with film. And he
worked HARD at it. I hooked up a webcam to my SCT and shot a better
image of Jupiter the first night than he ever go in two years. No knock
on my buddy, it's was just a better tool for the job.
When I say Tony's image I was blown away!! Like my buddy, there's no
way I could record all of those galaxies on film. But I sure enjoyed
looking at his work. Since I don't own a CCD camera, I don't lurk on
the CCD lists. So the occasional OT post to this list is OK by me, as
long as there's a post-processing tie-in to film.
Finally, I've seen a few comments about top-posting in the last few
days. I've never heard of it, and didn't realize that is was rude to
do. I personally like to see the reply on top, so that I can more
quickly scan through the hundreds of emails a day, without wearing out
my scroll bar and mouse. I apologize if I top-posted anyone!!
Thanks to all of for the effort you put into this list! It's the eamil
I check before everything else!!
