RE: from a lurker: Re: [APML] CCD on APML and a CCD image

CCD vs. film is not the issue, despite those on both
sides who are trying to pull it that way. The problem
is signal to noise.

The "old" cars analogy is the best I've seen presented.
This list is for film discussion. That is its sole
purpose. Now, due to technological changes it is a
widespread practice to scan the film image and then
do processing electronically. From the moment you
start the scan you now dealing with a CCD image. Hence
many (all?) of the techniques used in processing "pure"
CCD images are appropriate to the discussion of film
astrophotography.

But the list is for discussion of film astrophotography.
And as far as I know it is the only decent English language
list devoted to film.

There are numerous high volume lists devoted to CCD
imaging. Only one for film. People aren't trying
to ban CCD for CCD's sake, they are trying to keep
the list on topic. I'm not sure where things stand
now but in the past you could see many of the good
posters on this list also on CCD-related lists.

I also run the generic CCD list and have spent years
doing CCD imaging. So I am hardly biased against
CCDs. But that is not the purpose of this particular
list.
