RE: [APML] CCD on APML (was: NGC 7331)
I follow this group regularly as part of my learning process. I am new to
astrophotography (one year) and I am currently shooting techpan. It appears
to me that all of the different points of view are basically saying the same
thing. The ultimate goal of our endeavor is to produce an image. That
means either a print or a file for viewing on a monitor. Most of the people
in this group use CCD's to accomplish this. Either directly with a CCD
camera or indirectly with film, then with a scanner. Using film is an
additional step which brings up technical problems peculiar to film. These
problems are addressed in this forum and I have learned much from the
group's archives.
Based on my repeated unsuccessful attempts to sell an old B&W enlarger (I
have a spare) I think I am the only person in the continental United States
that still prints in the darkroom. The process has become digital for most
people. The majority of the work in creating an image is in the darkroom.
That's the way it has always been since photography was invented. If this
group is really about film and emulsion based technology only, I would
expect discussions on traditional wet darkroom techniques to produce fine
prints. But that's not what the group is about now. This group has evolved
away from emulsion based printing because there is a better way to produce
photographs. I think the same evolution is occurring with film vs. CCD
cameras. I have many fine references on fine art printing the old fashion
way. I come to this group to see what new techniques creative individuals
are coming up with.
I would encourage the group to keep film, but welcome any contributions from
photographers skilled in digital techniques. The photography world in
general is going down the same path. Digital techniques are just new tools
available to the photographer to create his or her art.
