Re: [APML] NGC 7331 Part A

Hello,

I think sometimes when you land a big one, people might want to see it and enjoy it for its own merit. If anyone is qualified to make film/CCD comments more than I am, please state your case because my film endeavors go back a long, long way and include a fair amount of improvisation. Having said this ... I need to share my observation that the more I use a CCD camera, the more it's like there is NO difference between what I am doing and what I did with film. The ONLY thing that makes a CCD different from film is the "newness" of it when you bridge over... and of course the cost ... but face it ... you could easily spend $50,000 on a high end FILM system... so leave cost out of it. To do CCD you will have to learn new techniques ... so what? In film we were inventing new techniques all the time ... if you have not seen Jerry's awesome CD book yet, I can tell you that it is FILLED with the fruits of these years of development in film ... to the intellectually curious, astrophotography is a never-ending path of exploration and invention.

So what about the dictum that this is a "film only" web site? I can respect that ... to your detriment. Why? Because nothing really has changed that much ... as I mentioned a long time ago, all that has changed is the recording medium... if a new film came out that was called "CCD" it would almost be the same thing... it's only a new recording medium... and I have to tell you, I have "carried over" about 90% of my FILM skills when I work with the CCD image data. ALL OF YOU will benefit from your film experiences when and if you image with a CCD camera ... all you get with a CCD camera is a grayscale image ... want to do color? It's tricolor ... same as B&W film images that people like Chuck Vaugn and Bill Fletcher have been doing all these years. I guess what I am trying to say is that once the "newness" is past, CCD is just like using film in many, many ways... you are still doing the same thing ... capturing an image and working with it. The techniques that we learned with film are paramount to good CCD images... you guys have such a HUGE advantage over anyone who is just starting out with no film experience... rejoice in this.
