Re: [APML] OT: Solution to software problem for Umax Powerlook III scanner

Many thanks to Volker, Gene, & Jim --- problem solved! This is one helluva
useful group!! After hanging on the phone to useless Umax support and
getting no help, one message to the list gets the answer within an hour or
two.
Actually the key to the problem lay in that peculiar installer message "need
scsimap.sys" from the Win "Found new Hardware" installer. Looking at your
messages and checking out the German Umax support URL (which IS better than
the US one), I got the idea to do a google on "scsimap.sys." What a ya know,
it turns up the UK Umax support database with a comment about the mysterious
file. It turns out that this file is required for Win98 and ME, but not for
Win2000 and the Win2000 installer is wrong in insisting that it be supplied!
Had to go in and delete a couple of files in winnt/inf and after that it all
installed just fine.
If anyone else runs into this problem with a umax scanner (mine is a
Powerlook III, not a Powerlook 3000, but the problem might occur with other
models), the solution is at: http://support.umax.co.uk/technotes/f122B.htm
at the bottom of the page.
Thanks again...

I've experienced the same problem after installing or re-installing the
Magic Scan software. My solution was to delete the scanner from the device
manager and manually re-install it. Letting the plug and pray routine do
the install never works. Sometimes I may have to do this multiple times, no
idea why, to get it to work.

I have cheeked the Vuescan site and they support the 3000 but at a very high
price.

There was an article about this recently on one of the trade sites.
Apparently
UMAX - USA is not a "real" company. It appears to be just a broker
importing
them but not providing any warranty support. And since they charge for
support it is not in their best interest to provide good drivers.

But the (IIRC) European companies are "real" and you can just go there for
the working drivers. At no charge.
