I encountered something like this back in May/June. Supposedly UMAX will 
not sell through a re-seller in the US anymore. Now you have to deal with 
them directly. I didn't get all of the facts on this, but when we had 
ordered 3 of them at school we were told they were only available directly 
from UMAX and that the government/educational pricing was no longer being 
offered. Maybe that has changed in the last month or so, but I haven't 
heard anything contrary to my original experience.

And, yes, they do charge you for the software, if you need the current 
version (for instance, it needs to run on Windows 2000). Some of the newer 
scanners will only work with the latest version and if you don't have the 
software, they do want to charge you for it. Luckily, I found my CD after a 
recent crash.
