[APML] Survived AstroImage 2002
Hi all,
I got back to Texas last night from the AstroImage 2002 conference held at
UC in Irvine. What a blast! That place was great!
As far as I know, I didn't say one dirty word during the webcast of the
program. I was fine Friday night, but my Saturday talk was done with jet
lag and sleep deprivation to the max. Hey Paul, how did it look up at
Whitewater? It was quite a production to broadcast that. Liam Kennedy, the
president of Orange County Astronomers, and his wife, were both busier than
one-armed wallpaper hangars keeping the stream on-line. It turns out the
webcast was being sent to a server Huntsville, Alabama, where it was then
sent to the various recipients. It was quite a production in order to
maintain the bandwidth to the recipients. I was impressed.
Mat BenDaniel, Tony Hallas, and Rob Gendler all had their work displayed by
Imelda Joson from Sky & Tel during her presentation.
I got to put real faces on film astrophotography people I have known by long
distance, such as Don Westergren from here on the list, Lee Coombs, and Bill
Fletcher. Sally didn't make it to the conference. Of course, there were
plenty of CCD guys there too. I roomed with Ron Wodaski, the CCD guru. I
was really great to find out that those Dark Side guys are as whacked in the
head as we film guys are <G>. It was also fun to meet up with Canadians
Jack Newton and Peter Cerovolo again for dinner on Saturday night.
In a way, I regret going to the conference because I wandered into the
vendor's and sponsor's room at the conference. Now I have a great lust in
my pocketbook for a copy of Main Sequence software (they sold out at the
show!) and Borg f/2.8 astrograph for the Pentax medium format camera. God!
I'm in love with that instrument. You folks go out and buy a copy of my
book so I can get one of these <G>!!
Anyway, I can't say enough about how great a job the Orange County
Astronomers did on AstroImage 2002. It was 1st class all they way.
Chairman Garth Buckles got the face time in front of the crowd as M.C., but
list member Dave Kodama, as well as Darren Thibodeau, Greg Pyros, Pat
Stoker, Bill Patterson, Liam Kennedy, and Stephen Eubanks were all
instrumental in pulling off the conference. Thanks guys!
In the next few days as my school schedule allows, I will post some
conference pictures on my web site.
