[APML] Attend AstroImage 2002 without travelling
Greetings everyone. The folks running next weekend's AstroImage conference
in Los Angeles asked me to relay this note to others on APML. They have
arranged for webcast of the conference so anyone can attend without
travelling to L.A.. I will be of course submitting to strip search and shoe
sniffing at the airport to get there, but you can avoid such indignities.

UPDATE on AstroImage 2002 August 23rd-25th: Attend the
conference without actually going there!
I am contacting you to inform you of a unique opportunity to
become a participant in a very special AstroImaging Conference.
The Orange County Astronomers AstroImaging Special Interest Group
decided to take on the development of a specialized 3-day
conference on film and CCD Astrophotography that would attract
the best names in the field to come and impart their knowledge to
all of us that need and seek their help!
Our club has been running an AstroImaging Conference for the past
15 years or so - but this one is very special indeed. We have
some of the most prominent speakers we could find in our interest
area descending on the University of California in Irvine. We
also have the sponsorship of some of the best companies involved
in supplying us with all the gizmos and gadgets that we all
simply must have to do our best work.
Now, if you have not already registered and you live far away
from southern California, it is probably a little late for you to
hop on a plane and come on over (although you would be most
welcome in any case). Instead I am offering you a unique way of
experiencing and participating in our conference.
We will be producing a live internet video stream of the
conference across the three days. From around the world you will
be able to view this stream - all you need is a computer system
and a reasonably fast internet connection. Last year we had
around 17 remote participants including at least two Universities
who decided to display the conference within an auditorium. This
year we can cope with a much larger group of remote attendees.
The stream will be accessible for a small charge of just $39 US
for the entire duration of the conference.
Of course, as this will be a live video event and we are in
California, you will probably have to stay up late in order to
see it. But - as we are all astronomers - staying up late is the
norm right! The Conference is happening very close to the full
Moon - so no need to worry that you will be missing valuable
viewing time at your telescopes either.
Remote participants will be able communicate with the Conference
through the use of a live chat system. Last year this facility
allowed the remote participants (some from Australia) a very
interactive presence within the Conference despite their distance
from it. They even got the opportunity to ask questions
directly of the speaker. We'll have the same capability - just
even better this time.
