[APML] Attend AstroImage 2002 at the University of WI-Whitewater viaInternet-streamed video this August 23rd ~ 25th, 2002
Dear ASTRO-Ler or AMPL-er,
The Orange County Astronomers (OCA) and the Department of
Physics of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater are offering
subscribers to ASTRO-L, ASTROALERT-L and ASTRO-PHOTO the opportunity
to attend the August 23rd ~ 25th, 2002, OCA astroimaging conference
AstroImage 2001 -- AT NO COST TO ATTENDEES -- via a streaming video
feed to Whitewater Observatory on the campus of the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater.
This year, the format and content of the conference has been
expanded to include an introduction to astro-imaging, national level
speakers and exhibitor product workshops. Whether you are a beginner
or an advanced astro-imager, the conference offers an opportunity for
all.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
The keynote speaker will be Jack Newton. Mr. Newton is an
internationally recognized amateur astronomer and astro-imager. He
has pioneered the field of amateur CCD photography, especially the
development of high resolution tri-color imaging. His photographs
are well-known to readers of Astronomy, Sky & Telescope, and CCD
Astronomy magazines. He is also a frequent contributor to other
magazines and newspapers around the globe.
As author or co-author of a number of books on astronomy, his
writings and images enjoy an international following. Included in
those works are Deep Sky Objects (Gall Publishers, Toronto, 1977),
the Cambridge Deep Sky Album (Cambridge University Press, 1983) and
the Guide to Amateur Astronomy (Cambridge University Press, 1984)
which was revised and re-released last year. He most recently
co-authored Splendors of the Universe (Firefly Books, 1997) with
fellow Canadian science writer Terence Dickinson. Mr. Newton has
recently purchased land in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern
Arizona where their vision is to create a world-class astronomy
village in one of the last vestiges of truly dark skies in America.
INTERNET-based STREAMING VIDEO
Last year AstroImage 2001 was streamed live for 8 hours of the
conference. This year we are running an extended 3-day format to an
even wider audience. The details and capability to do this have only
just been finalized - hence the rather late email.
OCA has been running an AstroImaging Conference for the past 15
years or so - but this one is very special indeed. We have some of
the most prominent speakers we could find in our interest area
descending on the University of California in Irvine. We will be
producing a live internet video stream of the conference across the
three days. Last year we had around 17 remote participants including
at least two Universities who decided to display the conference
within an auditorium. This year we can cope with a much larger group
of remote attendees.
YOU CAN ASK QUESTIONS!
Remote participants will be able communicate with the Conference
through the use of a live chat system. Last year this facility
allowed the remote participants (some from Australia) a very
interactive presence within the Conference despite their distance
from it. They even got the opportunity to ask questions directly of
the speaker. We'll have the same capability - just even better this
time.
WE LISTENED TO YOUR FEEDBACK!
The only difficulty encountered last year by streaming video
viewers at UW-Whitewater was the inability to read viewgraphs with
small print. This problem will be avoided this year with printed
handouts of most, if not all, of the viewgraphs to be displayed. Not
only will these handouts make the presentations more understandable,
but they will also be handy for taking notes and writing down
questions to pose from the chat room.
