Robert Gendler's image of NGC 6946, with its magnificent beauty, with numerous
emission nebulae showing in the spiral arms, strikes me as all the best
of what western Democracy can achieve. Free, unfettered, people, let loose
all by themselves and even those who are making their own way in a profession,
produce incredible and unexpected results.
My old mentor, Bart Bok, used to constantly speak of the great and important contribution to astronomy that dedicated "amateurs" make to the field. We so-called amateurs, ranging from Doctors to Ditchdiggers, have always lit up our free cultures. Robert Gendler's work should go into the Louve, in my opinion. best wishes, Glenn Shaw
