Hi Rolland;
No arguement from me there, I would cover your bet to be sure, I
was only pointing out that some exceptions occur. In the case of that one
lens I was talking about, I believe the news source quoing about it pointed
out it was basically a one of a kind made for a specific industrial use,
and by no means an "off the shelf" lens.
My problem is (or one of many :) I am a natural born scrounger, I
love to stick my nose into things, and it's amazing what shakes loose from
time to time. In my limied experience, I run across some weird
stuff. Almost everything I am thinking off is from heavy
commercial/industrial or military application, and some of the stuff is
rather esoteric. Some of it is sad too - in the rush to digital, I have
seen some equipment, where the oringal cost of the optics alone probally
cost more than my car, headed for the dumpster.

The other thing I have noticed - if I am not wandering off too far
off topic - is that pound for pound (or inch for inch), telescope optics,
good optics that is, are a lot less money than optics in any other area of
industry. For example, a 6" AP refractor, sold say for industrial use,
would probally fetch $20G - or more.
That may jolt some people, but I have a large format camera lens,
(supposed and APO lens) 6 element, and physically the size of the glass is
about the same as a 32mm plossl. Price was $1,000 for the little lens. LF
camra lense that approach the physical size of a 31mm Nagler sell for
around $-$5G, depending on what you are looking at.
Imagine public reaction if somebody started selling a wide angle,
1.25", 6 element eyepiece for $1,000 no matter how good it was. :)
