You can go further and do everything 'in house'.  If you are using colour 
negative film, then C-41 processing is really quite easy.  And with today's 
state of the art colour printers you can achieve results that are very 
comparable to a top quality photolab.  As an example, I have been selling 
quite large quantities of this image as 13x18" prints: 
http://www.astrocruise.com/planets.htm  which have been produced totally 
'in house'.  The only downside I have found is that if you have a large 
number of 'daylight' type shots, then the process of producing 6x4 prints 
is a lot more laborious and time consuming compared to the automated 
equipment they use in labs.
