I am curious
as to how much of the outer nebulosity shows up on the RGBs or is it
only apparent in the Halpha?

None of the outer stuff appears in RGB, probably because we are limited in the exposure time before stars saturate and bloom in these colors (and in the luminance).

Can you share with us some of the

techniques Rob suggested?

Basically, I chose a combination of Red and Ha for the red channel, then used Ha for a 40% Luminance. The end result might be a bit overpowering but this is because the blue and green fall off very rapidly at the edge of the "normal" nebula, and the Ha dominates in the outer part.
